1 in 6 East Tennessee plumbing and HVAC businesses has no website
In October 2026 we checked 352 plumbing and heating and air listings on Google Maps across East Tennessee. 62 of them, about 1 in 6, had no website of their own: no website link at all, or only a Facebook page.
What we found
| Search | Listings | No website |
|---|---|---|
| Plumbers within 15 miles of Maryville | 51 | 9 (18%) |
| Heating and air, 12 towns from Knoxville to Kingsport | 301 | 53 (18%) |
| Both searches | 352 | 62 (18%) |
The share was almost exactly the same in both searches: roughly one business in six. Looking only at listings located in Knoxville, 12 of 78 had no website of their own.
Many of them are good businesses
These aren't abandoned listings. 40 of the 62 businesses without a website had at least 10 Google reviews and a rating of 4.0 or better. Their average rating was 4.7 stars, and the most-reviewed of them had 188 reviews.
There is one big gap. The well-reviewed businesses with websites had a median of 131 reviews; the well-reviewed businesses without one had a median of about 25. That doesn't prove a website earns reviews: bigger, older companies tend to have both. It does show that the businesses missing a website are mostly smaller operations that customers already rate highly, with nowhere online to send the next customer.
Why it matters
When people need a plumber or a heating and air company, they search on their phone and compare a few listings on the map. Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence, and that information from across the web about a business counts toward prominence (Google's guide to local ranking). A business with only a listing gives Google, and customers, far less to go on. More on profiles and websites.
How we counted
- We searched Google Maps the way a customer would: "plumbers" around Maryville, Alcoa, Seymour and Friendsville on October 18, 2026, and "HVAC" around Knoxville, Maryville, Sevierville, Oak Ridge, Morristown, Johnson City, Greeneville, Kingsport, Crossville, Cleveland, Athens and LaFollette on October 21, 2026.
- Each business counts once, even if it showed up in several towns.
- Has a website means the listing links to a site of its own, including ones made with builders like Wix, Square or Jobber. No website of its own means no website link, or only a Facebook or other social page.
- Google lists a few HVAC supply houses alongside contractors. We left them in, as Google shows them; they all have websites, so the share among contractors alone is slightly higher.
- Listings change every day, so this is a snapshot. We'll add more trades and towns as we check them.
Questions about these numbers

In our October 2026 check of 352 plumbing and heating and air listings on Google Maps across East Tennessee, 62, about 1 in 6, had no website of their own. Other trades may differ; we'll publish them as we check.
Do businesses with websites get more reviews?
In our sample, well-reviewed businesses with a website had a median of 131 Google reviews, against about 25 for those without one. That's a correlation, not proof: larger and longer-running companies are more likely to have both.
