Who does Google's AI recommend for the trades in East Tennessee?

On October 28, 2026 we asked Google's two AI search tools, Ask Maps and AI Mode, for the best plumber, roofer, electrician and HVAC company in six East Tennessee towns. Across 24 questions they named 127 businesses. 94% were rated 4.8 stars or higher and 90% had a website on their Google listing, but almost half had fewer than 100 Google reviews. The business with the most reviews was named in only 7 of the 24 answers.

Which businesses did Google's AI pick in each town?

The bigger the market, the higher the bar. In Knoxville, the typical business Google's AI named had about 500 reviews, and every one had a website. In the smaller towns the typical pick had between 72 and 125 reviews, and a few without a website made the list.

Some businesses were named in more than one town, so the towns add up to more than 127. One business's website and review count couldn't be checked, so a few columns count 126.

How much does the star rating matter?

More than anything else we measured. 94% of the businesses named were rated 4.8 or higher, and 51% had a perfect 5.0. The lowest-rated pick had 4.3 stars, and it was the only one under 4.5.

So a handful of unhappy customers can count for more than a pile of missing reviews. Fixing a problem before it becomes a 1-star review is part of being recommended.

Do you need hundreds of Google reviews?

No. Almost half the businesses Google's AI named, 61 of 126, had fewer than 100 reviews, and 20 had fewer than 30. The business with the most reviews in each search was named in only 7 of the 24 answers. More reviews help, especially in Knoxville, but the count alone didn't decide who was named.

The AI didn't simply copy the Google Maps list, either. Of the picks we could match to the Maps results, 40% were in the top 3, 36% were ranked 4 to 10, and 24% sat further down the list.

Do the businesses Google's AI recommends have websites?

Nine in ten do: 114 of the 126 businesses we could check linked a website on their Google listing. That's a little higher than the 85% of all 1,219 listings in the same Google Maps searches. In Knoxville, every business the AI named had one. The 12 without one were all outside Knoxville, where there are fewer businesses to choose from.

When we looked closer, 3 of those 12 did have a website. Their Google listing just didn't link to it. That's a two-minute fix, and worth checking on your own listing.

A website on its own doesn't get a business named. But in the biggest market we checked, Google's AI didn't name anyone without one. Why a profile needs a website.

What does the AI say about the businesses it picks?

Each pick comes with a short write-up that mixes what customers say in reviews with what the business says about itself. We saw lines about same-day and 24-hour service, upfront pricing, veteran-owned and family-run businesses, generations of experience, and specific jobs like tankless water heaters and drain cleaning. AI Mode also gives each pick's hours and what it's "best for".

So the details matter: hours that are filled in, every service listed by name, and a description that says plainly what makes you different. If it isn't written down on your Google profile or your website, the AI has nothing to repeat.

What should a trades business do to get recommended?

  1. Protect your rating. Ask every customer for a review, the same way, and fix problems before they turn into 1-star reviews.
  2. Keep reviews coming. A steady few every month, and a reply to every one.
  3. Fill in your Google Business Profile. Hours, every service by name, your own photos, and a description that says what makes you different.
  4. Have a website that names your services and towns. In Knoxville, every business the AI named had one.
  5. Check for yourself. Open Google Maps, choose Ask Maps (you'll need to be signed in), and ask for the best business in your trade in your town.

How did we do it?

  • On October 28, 2026 we asked "Who is the best [plumber, roofer, electrician or HVAC company] in [town], TN?" for Knoxville, Maryville, Oak Ridge, Lenoir City, Clinton and Kingston: 24 questions.
  • Each question went to Ask Maps, the AI assistant in Google Maps (a new conversation each time, with the map on that town), and to AI Mode in Google Search.
  • We counted every business each answer named. A business named in several answers counts once in the totals.
  • Ratings and review counts are as Google showed them that day. For AI Mode's picks we used the numbers in its answer. For Ask Maps' picks we matched each name to the Google Maps results for "[trade] in [town], TN". "Website" means the Google listing links one. We also used those results, up to about 70 listings per search and 1,219 in all, for the comparison figures. Sponsored listings were left out.
  • Both tools were used signed in to one Google account, and Google personalizes Ask Maps. Someone else may see different names, and answers change from day to day.
  • We didn't measure owner replies to reviews, photos, or how recent the reviews were.
  • Our bias: we build websites for trades businesses, so we have a stake in websites mattering. The numbers above are as we found them. Email us if you'd like the raw data.

Common questions

Does Google's AI recommend businesses without a website?

Sometimes, in smaller towns. In our October 2026 check, 12 of the 126 businesses we could check had no website on their Google listing, all outside Knoxville, and 3 of those had a site the listing didn't link. In Knoxville, every business it named had one.

How many Google reviews do I need to be recommended by AI?

There's no set number. Almost half the businesses Google's AI named had fewer than 100 reviews, and a few had fewer than 10. Nearly all were rated 4.8 or higher.

What's the difference between Ask Maps and AI Mode?

Ask Maps is the AI assistant inside Google Maps: you ask a question and it answers with businesses on the map. AI Mode is the AI answer tab in Google Search. In our check, they agreed on the top pick in 18 of 24 questions.

Can a business pay to be recommended by Ask Maps?

We didn't see any ads or sponsored picks in the Ask Maps answers we got in October 2026.
